Palma's Gothic cathedral on the seafront — come between half past eight and nine, when the sun pierces the largest rose window in Gothic Europe and the nave turns kaleidoscope. Gaudí's wrought-iron canopy floats above the altar like nobody told it to behave.

The rose window is the largest in Gothic Europe — over 12 metres across — and twice a year (2 February, 11 November) the morning sun projects it as a figure-of-eight on the opposite wall. Gaudí restored the interior in the early 1900s; the wrought-iron canopy over the altar still divides opinion. Go between 8:30 and 9:00 am when light pierces the stained glass and the place turns into a kaleidoscope. Avoid midday — that's when every cruise group arrives.
Good to know
Book tickets online before you go; queues and crowds are heavy in season. Closed Sundays. The back of the cathedral is open to the public, so you can glimpse the interior without paying.
